Spear- carrying infantry were superseded by arrow-firing charioteers, who were succeded by mounted cavalry carrying either bows or edged weapons, who in their turn had to give way to iron-armored foot soldiers who dominated the classical age. *technological progress before 1800 was for the most part comparatively slow. The accelerated pace of technological innovation in modern times, was by no means the sole result of the new awareness of invention. In addition to becoming sustained, technological progress also became deliberate and therefore, up to a point, predictable. *military organizations have tended to be even less flexible than most large bureaucratic structures. *what distinguished the period after 1830 most of all was that military- technological innovation became not only rapid but also institutionalized and permanent. As each successive generation of sophisticated weapons and weapons systems appeared on the scene, all its predecessors were either thrown onto the garbage heap or sold to some less developed countries.
