Crete inhabited as early as 7000 bc but architecture did not develop until around 2000 bc. Great buildings were not tombs or temples but were merchant-prince (interest in trade, not conquest) palaces. Knossos (a place) 1899 found structures which brought minoans back to attention. Unknown whether the king here was supreme over crete because there were multiple palaces but his was most imposing (was a residence and center for manufacturing and a storehouse) Not fortified so they must have had no fear of invasion and controlled the whole. Egypt wanted wood and olive oil (egyptians were river sailors) Minoans and phoenicians were the ones who took to the sea and wanted to serve. Minoans active in egypt as early as middle kingdom (2100-1700 bc) and were really influenced by minoans. Aristocrats in knossos and phaistos were merchants, not warriors and others were able to scatter to aegean islands and get comfortable but little is known of peasants.
