Document Summary

Persian wars as catalyst: persian defeat did not cripple xerxes and greeks could not assume the persians gave up, most important thing was to get persians out of greek territory and organize defense, sparta"s retreat. Hard to create cooperation between spartans (best army) and athens (best navy) because they had no trust in each other. Athenians were homeless for a while because the persians burnt athena. Spartans said that athens should not rebuild defenses unless persians reoccupy the city and use it against greeks. Said spartan villages were unfortified and spartan men were all the walls they needed. Themistocles dragged out talks with spartans long enough for athenians to build some barricades. Pausanias (spartan general who won at plateae) pursued persians but was too ambitious and his allied accused him of acting like persian tyrant and spartans grew suspicious of him.
