Document Summary

Primary justification (extra-musical): development of mental discipline, good citizenship, worthy use of leisure time. Other subjects can fulfil these needs too. High costs make justification of music difficult. If any aspect of a man"s physical, intellectual, ethical, and aesthetic potential is neglected, he never attains true stature as a human being (leonhard and house) Music as art neglected over entertainment and public relations values in schools. High-quality performance also emphasized over understanding music. However, eliminating performance groups in favor of music appreciation courses doesn"t help. Teachers need to advocate for music as a serious subject. Should be justified on basis of uniqueness as an art instead of inter-art relationships or inter- curricular connections. Musical focus has been too narrow and conservative. Surge in interest of music not related to music educators. Students learn and retain the things they sincerely want to learn. Teachers need to demonstrate the why certain things are important, not just the what and how.
