AHS 100- Chapter 12: The Urinary and Male Reproductive Systems- Urology
❖The reproductive systems is what separates the sexes. Both men and
women produce half the blueprints for new life which are found in
the sperm and eggs. The reproductive systems are responsible for
making these code carriers and also for helping to bring the two
together.
❖In medicine the male and female reproductive systems are cared for
by different specialties. Urology deals with both the urinary tract
and the male reproductive system.

❖The kidneys perform the important function of keeping the blood
clean and well maintained/balanced. The cells of the body are in
constant contact with the blood. They require just the right balance
of pH, minerals, water, and sugar, and the kidneys monitor and
regulate these levels. If they did not perform their job, blood would
soon become toxic.
❖The basic working unit of the kidneys is the nephron. Blood passes
through the kidneys into a cluster of small blood vessels known as
glomerulus. Here the blood is filtered, with water and nutrients being
forced into the surrounding capsule around the glomerulus. The
filtered liquid then flows through a series of tubes.
❖The tubes flow next to the blood vessels. As the filtrate passes
through this series of tubes, much of the water and nutrients in it are
reabsorbed back into the bloodstream. At the same time, the
remaining unfiltered waste is forced into the last part of the tubes.
