Document Summary

At the age of 22, voyaged around the world on the beagle. As the ship"s naturalist, darwin collected biological materials of all kinds (including fossils) from many places. Collected extensively in the galapagos islands in the eastern pacific. Returned to england in 1836 and spent the next 23 years analyzing data and interpreting results. Result of this work was a book describing 2 concepts. And he provided lots of evidence supporting these ideas. Mechanism by which descent with modification occurs. This was truly novel idea- and one that resulted in revolutionizing our understanding of biology. It explains how organisms are well adapted to their environments by natural means. All species have the reproduce potential to increase exponentially in population. Yet, natural populations tend to remain stable in size. Production of more individuals that can be supported by the environment leads to a struggle for existence. Only a fraction of any population will survive and reproduce ( the fittest)
