Mexico: the clash of imperialist & nationalist archaeologies. Independence latin america 1822- prolonged war for ind. Mexico brings in scientificos: scientificos- brought in from outside to increase mexican technology/agrilucture (primarily germans, germans work in highlands- teotihuacan- did observations/reconsutrctions of big pyramids. Decline of 1 million: pri takes power- till 2000s, 6 yr presidencies, dictatorial like power, lazaro cardenas 1934-1940- left wing reforms, brings intellectual renaissance, invites back artists who left during revo (usually in france) Making a new national identity, melding of european and indigenous mexican. The cosmic race- mestizos-half, mexican sitcoms people were white. Identity in art & education- diego rivera. Think- how is ancient native american past of n. america incorporated into the national. Tendency to distance ourselves/ignore the native american past.
