Sparta sent only 300 citizens (all with at least 1 living son) and 900 helots. Sends in his elite persian unit known as immortals (numbered 10,000) Day 2 of the battle has same result. At night, ephialtes approaches xerxes and sells out greeks by informing. Xerxes of pass around the mountains to surround greeks. Greeks had guards posted up on ridge of pass. Greek lookouts notify leonidas of this position.
