Document Summary

Leviathan - hobbes greatest work centered around the evils of civil war and the anarchy accompanied with it. Nothing could be worse than life without the protection of state - hobbes. Hobbes believed a strong government was a necessity to prevent slipping into the war of all against all . Hobbes believed that in the absence of government severe conflict would be inevitable as a result of human nature. For instance, sensation would be the pressing of an organ and desire an internal movement towards an object . The importance of this metaphor is that creates the idea of human beings always searching for something and never truly at rest. Hobbes though humans fear of death would lead them to create a state. Hobbes sees three main reasons for attack in the state of nature, for gain, for safety (a cautionary attack) and for reputation.
