Document Summary

In the 1940s, women were still subjected to massive inequality. Prior to the various married women"s property laws in the late nineteenth century, a woman"s property became her husband"s. Before the equal pay act of 1970, companies often had different pay structures (in fact it was standard) for males and females as this wasn"t yet illegal. Women could not even obtain credit or make a hire purchase without permission of their husband. This shows that prior to popular belief, a lot of progress has been made in just 1-2 generations, showing we are progressing in the right direction. Policy of equal rights unfortunately doesn"t translate to equal rights because even if women don"t experience open discrimination subtle forms of it are still very present. Prior the first equal pay act women on average earned 63 percent of a men"s hourly pay.
