Labeling theory = belief that individuals subconsciously notice how others see or label them and their actions to those labels, over time, form the basis of their self- identity. Social groups create rules about correct and standard mode of conduct for social actors. Secondary deviance = subsequent acts of rule breaking that occur after primary deviance and as a result of new deviant label. Stigma = negative social label that changes how others treat and view people and it alters those peoples self-concept and social identity: ex. Devah pager created an experiment with black and white males with and without criminal records applying for jobs. Broken windows theory of deviance = theory explaining how social context and social clues impact whether individuals act defiantly; whether local informed social norms allow deviant acts. Crime = violated laws enacted by society. Street crime =crime committed in public: ex. Reducing crime: raise costs of economy such as lowering net returns.
