Learning objectives: understand the major concepts described and their applications/importance. The scientific method: briefly describe the scientific method, the process of formulating and testing hypotheses in a rigorous and objective manner, differentiate between basic and applied research. Basic research example: add to our understanding of the phenomena we are interested in. Why is it important: something is reliable when it produces the same or similar results each time it is used. This is necessary because it would not be very useful if it gave you widely different values each time it was used. A measure is considered valid if it measures what it says it is going to measure. A population includes everyone in the category we are interested in studying or learning more about.
