Document Summary
Hierarchy of information- divide document into major sections: subdivide major sections into subsections. Primary section- contain general and important information. Secondary (subordinate) section- contain specific less important information. Heading- level 1 heading, heading 1, a heading. Subordinate heading- level 2 heading, heading 2, b heading. Lower level subordinate heading- level 3 heading, heading 3, c heading. Revising headings: avoid long noun strings, be informative, use grammatical form appropriate to the audience, avoid back to back headings. It forces you to look at the big picture. It forces you to create a helpful lead in. It forces you to clarify and tighten prose. How to show the relationship between different types of writing. How to communicate the organization of the document as a whole and of the parts making up the whole. Body paragraph- basic unit for communicating information. Transitional paragraph- helps readers move between major topics.
