In this lab, you will learn the fundamental principles that geologists use to determine relative age relationships between adjacent bodies of rock and for sequences of geologic events. Learning to interpret relative age relationships is extremely important in all aspects of geology, including mining, petroleum exploration, engineering geology, and paleontological research. Using these principles, it is possible to prove that trilobites lived and died before the dinosaurs appeared and became extinct. Sedimentary rocks are often called layered rocks because they tend to be deposited as discrete layers and, if they are of different compositions or grain sizes, can be distinguished from one another.
