Document Summary

What is data: facts or figures from which conclusions can be drawn. Difference between data and numbers: data can be any character, text, word, number, and if not put into context, means little or nothing to a human, data may be a number, but not have a quantitative value. Data analysis: the process of transforming raw data into usable information, often presented in the form of a published analytical article, in order to add value to the statistical output. Two ways for organizing categorical variables: bar charts, pie charts. Frequency: the number of times something occurs. Relative frequency: the fraction of times an answer occurs. Stacked data: narrow, presented with one column containing all the values and another column listing the context of the value. Unstacked data: wide, presented with each different data variable in a separate column. Numerical data: expressed with digits as opposed to letters or words, can be broken down into two categories: discrete and continuous.
