Document Summary
Single biggest problem of sociology experience filters perception of reality. Our everyday life our biases easily influence our observations. Often leads us to draw incorrect conclusions about what we see. The research cycle: 1) formulate question; 2) review existing literature; 3) select method; 4) collect data; 5) analyze data; 6) report results. Qualitative analysis aimed at understanding patterns of social relationships in small-scale social settings and the meanings people attach to those relationships. Quantitative analysis associates specific social qualities with discrete quantities. Field research research based on the observation of people in their natural settings. Detached observation involves classifying and counting the behavior of interest according to a predetermined scheme. Direct observation two problems confound it; 1) hawthorne effect (example) classroom participation decreases when researchers come in due to intimidation; 2. ) The observed behavior may be obscure to the researcher (eye wink could mean many things: twitch, secret being kept, sexual come-on, etc. )
