Shift from absolute monarchy to a more democratic organization coincided with a shift in emphasis on stone as a medium of communication or as a basis of prestige, as shown in the pyramids, to an emphasis on papyrus. Papyrus sheets dated from first dynasty & inscribed sheets dated to the fifth dynasty. It was made from a plant that was restricted in its habitat to the nile delta, and was manufactured into writing material near marshes. Brushes made from a kind of rush were used for writing. Scribe"s palette had two cups for red and black ink. Wrote from right to left, arranging the text in vertical columns and horizontal lines. Writing on stone was characterized by straightness or circularity of line, rectangularity of form, and an upright position. Papyrus writing was more simple and round; became script. Increase in writing by hand was accompanied by the secularization of writing, thought, and activity.
