NURS 3350 Chapter 17: Med surge chapter 17
Document Summary
Minimally invasive surgery= surgical procedures that use specialized instruments inserted into the body either through natural orifices or through small incisions. Consists of 3 phases: preoperative phase= begins when decision to proceed with surgical intervention is made and ends when patient is transferred into the operating room. The perioperative nursing data set categorizes practice of perioperative nursing into 4 domains: safety, physiologic responses, behavioral responses, health care systems. Technological advancements help us perform more complex procedures that are less invasive, and therefor cause less deaths during the recovery phase of surgery. Creates a safer atmosphere in which to operate. Decision to do surgery may be based on a diagnosis, a cure, a repair, reconstructive/cosmetic purposes, rehabilitative purposes, or palliative (relieving pain. ) Can also be classified based upon degree of urgency. Ambulatory surgeries= do not require overnight hospital stay. Goal of preadmission testing is to reduce hospital stays and contain costs.
