Goats, sheep, cows: most efficient tools to harvest: silages and baleage. Process of ensiling under anaerobic conditions; fermented plant materials. Common storage method for feed, but does not improve quality. Classes 1, 2, and 3 are roughages (or forages) with 18% cf, 2-30% cp. Relatively immature, green & leafy, not much stems, free of mold, palatable & free of foreign material. Legumes vs grasses: alfalfa (queen of forage) and clovers usually higher quality than grasses. Low in fiber = low in protein. High starch, nfe (nitrogen free extract), high energy. Examples: cereal grains (corn, oats, barley), by-products.
