Document Summary

Gene pool total store of genes and their alleles in a population. Population a community of individuals within which matings occur. Allele frequency the proportion of an allele relative to all alleles for a particular gene. Evolution a change in allele frequencies in a population or species over time. Positive assorting mating (inbreeding: homozygosity increases, heterozygosity decreases, no change in the allele frequency. Negative assorting mating (outbreeding: homozygosity decreases, heterozygosity increases, no change in allele frequency. Species a group or groups of interbreeding organisms that are reproductively isolated from other groups: speciation results when one population of a species no longer can interbreed with other populations. This reproduction isolation occurs when one population becomes geographically isolated from other populations: there is a buildup of gene pool differences between population a and populations b-d. If these gene pool differences preclude interbreeding between population a and populations b-d, then a new species has risen.
