BE 2350 Chapter : HW 1
Document Summary
Three application areas for measurement system are as follows: regulating trade: applying instruments that measure physical quantities (length, mass, and volume). This application is used commonly by carpenters by measuring a specific length of wood to cut for a project: monitoring functions: provides information that allows to take some prescribed action accordingly. A/ active instruments have an output resulting from modulations of the magnitude of an external power source. They have the potential for a much higher resolution than passive instruments and are more expensive. These types of instrument are better quality and provide higher resolution than passive instruments. As such, active instruments have the quality advantage against passive instruments. B/ passive instruments have an output produced entirely by the quantity of the measurand and a resolution dependent of the measurand. An example of a passive instrument is a pressure-measuring device in which the pressure of the fluid is translated into movement of a pointer against a scale.
