Document Summary

Chapter 12: riches in rock: energy and mineral resources: fossil fuels. Chain or ring of carbon and hydrogen. First these organisms die and accumulate in o2 poor water and clay (this can occur in lakes and oceans) Next these organisms are buried and ooze => organic shale. At 90-160o c it turns into oil/gas and at 250o turns into strictly gas. The oil/gas is less dense and buoyant. Reservoir rock => contains oil/gas that can flow through rock (porous and has space between the grains) Rock must have pore space and be permeable. Seal rock is impermeable (ex: shale, un-fractured limestone) Have fault traps, anticline traps, salt domes, and stratigraphic: source rock, heat, migratory path, trap holds, hydrocarbon, system, drilling/refining, oil production. Pump drilling muds (water, clay, and chemicals) Then you begin pumping oil (only get ~30% of oil through pumping) Enhance oil recovery => forcing steam down hole.
