Document Summary

Geol 8/30/13 part 2 (ch1): layers of the earth: chemical layers, crust, mantle, core, physical layer, lithosphere, asthenosphere. Planetesimals were homogeneous - all of the elements were equal. Heat: collision, squeezing of matter into smaller volume, radioactive decay caused differentiation - caused all dense materials to sink to the center of the earth density decreases towards the outer layers. Core: fe-alloy inner core - solid iron - pressure is too high for it to be liquid outer core - liquid iron temperature increases closer to the center of the earth - geothermal gradient. Mantle biggest layer of the earth, softer (than crust) ---> flows (15 cm/yr) made out of peridotite(rock) dark and dense. Crust variable thickness (max 70 km) continental crust average 25-35 km thick range from 20-70km oceanic crust (underneath the ocean) average thickness 7 km, ranges from 1-10 km. Basalt (volcanic) has fe and mg + sio2 abundant elements. Fe,mg(magnesium) + sio2(silicate) it generates our magnetic field.
