ENVS 1126 Chapter : Joe Tullos Algae
Document Summary
Problematic algae in the sedimentation and filtration process of water treatment plants. Gyeongje joh, yang soon choi, jae-ki shin and jiyoung lee. Problematic algae, algae that was difficult to remove, is commonly long and needle shaped. Algae that form long cells or colonies are less compact and less likely to settle as poor flocs. These species clogged the sand filters in water treatment plants causing less efficiency and need for repeated backwash. The needle shaped diatom synedra acus and the discoid diatom. Stephanodiscus hantzschii f. tenuis were concluded to be the affecting algae, along with two cases where s. acus clogged the water treatment filters resulting in reduced production and economic loss. The article clearly states the scientific problem which is how to deal with the overflow of problematic algae. The scientists sufficiently addressed methods of eliminating the algae such as: pre-chlorination, increased coagulant doses, pac treatment, and regularly change coagulants.
