Document Summary

Marginal minorities and the new deal: women the depression was especially hard hit because during the 20s their roles began to change dramatically, work - once the depression hit all of the opportunity vanished. The assumption by employers was that women just worked to supplement income with the husband, so they should offer jobs to men before women. The expectation of things for women to do was increased. The amount of the work during the 20s decreased because of drycleaners and maids. However during the depression they had to increase their at home work. Even though more are working they are making less money in manual labor jobs. The average working women made 500 a year, and most men made 1000 a year. Most people believed that married women and mothers should not be working. The new deal was designed to help only one person in the family and generally that wasn"t a woman.
