Document Summary

Microorganisms are naturally present in the human body: also known as flora: Present from esophagus to rectum: mutualistic relationship. Beneficial / pathogenic microorganisms: human body has both beneficial and pathogenic + non-disease bearing microorganisms. It all depends on the balance of good over bad: pathogenic / non-disease bearing example. Streptococci: found in the mouth / throat but can cause strep throat: microbiome vs. microbiota. Microbiota: bacteria in a specific part of the body: eyes / mouth / saliva, gi tract, surface / deep layers of skin, reproductive tracts. Human microbiome project: female / male reproductive tracts. Discusses how most of the organisms are very similar or the same. Perhaps due to the fact that all fetuses begin developing as females: normal flora of humans. Skin: corynebacterium diphtheria, staphylococcus epidermis, propionibacterium acnes, strains of streptococci. Upper respiratory tract: staphylococci, streptococci, spirochetes. Diverse and complex: neisseria, haemophilus, branhamella, lactobacillus acidophilus, anaerobic spirochetes, e. coli, pseudomonas, mycobacterium.
