Several studies were taken to obtain information about alligator habitat and population. Among these were aerial surveys and night time sightings. The areas of focus were divided into 3 locations: the chenier plane, sub-delta, and active delta. These marshes were subdivided based on salinity and vegetation. The hunting regulations started in 1972 with only 1 parish opened for hunting and eventually grew to a statewide area by 1981 spanning nearly 10 years.
