ME 2212 Chapter : Design Chapter 2
Document Summary
In a not too distant past, many designs required knowledge of only mechanical parts and could be built by one or two brilliant minds. The world we live in today is full of complex devices made from mechanical, electrical, and computer components. We take this advanced technology for granted, overlooking the integration of many engineering fields and the team work now required to fully develop modern products. As society became more advanced, so did the design process and how we look and classify products. Certain features, primarily function and form, are now used to describe modern mechanical devices and how they work. Function simply refers to what a particular device does, form tells us how it accomplishes this task. To put it in other words: function and form explain how the device solves the problem we designed it for. We can also describe the mechanical design problems we are faced with.
