Document Summary

In the right thing to do by james rachels, various authors argue for and against the controversial practices of euthanasia and genetic engineering. These bioethics issues are commonly discussed and debated because there are so many differing opinions on the topics. In the morality of euthanasia by james rachels, he defends the practice of assisted suicide with the argument from mercy. His argument is simple and states that euthanasia is justified because it provides an end to the agonizing pain suffered by terminally ill patients. Rachels recounts the death of jonathan swift, an irish satirist, who took eight years to die, and for the final three years existed only in a drooling vegetative state (rachels 306). Another terminally ill patient, stewart alsop, came to approve of the practice of euthanasia after his brief stay with a man named jack who suffered a terrible death from a melanoma in his stomach.
