PHIL 1021 Chapter : 02 01 12 Lec2
Document Summary
Do not need to know truth value of premises and conclusions. All schnitzers are bmws, emily owns a schnitzer, so emily owns a bmw. Refer to the chart on page 15 of the text. Keep different configurations of truth value of premises and conclusion straight. We want deductive arguments to be valid and have all true premises. All collies are dogs, all dogs are animals, so all collioes are animals. Unsound arguments fall under one of three categories. 1: valid with at least one false premise (true conclusion) 2: invalid, but all premises are true (conclusion isn"t guaranteed by the premises) 3: invalid, but at least one false premise. Unsound argument one that is either invalid or has at least one false premise. All birds are animals, some grizzly bears are animals, therefore some grizzly bears are not birds. Sound arguments that had its conclusion as a premise would be useless.
