Document Summary

Objectives: identify the mechanical properties of sound, describe the neurobiology of sound perception, describe the three theories of pitch perception, describe the basic mechanisms of the other senses: taste, Hearing: the stimulus input: sound waves, part of the ear, hearing impairment. Sound waves: sound waves are vibrations of the molecules in the air that surround us, acoustical transduction: conversion of sound waves into neural impulses in the hairs cells of the inner ear. Volume (loudness: volume: amount of energy in a wave determined by amplitude relates to perceive loudness, amplitude is measure in decibels(db, great amplitude: (bright colors, loud sounds, small amplitude: (dull colors, soft sounds) 2: cochlea is filled with fluid to help transport waves, which moves the basilar membrane. The basilar membrane has cells which form the organ of corti. 85 prolonged exposures between 84-90 decibels can be potentially damageable to the ear.
