REL 1000 Chapter : African Religions
Document Summary
Like native american religions, african religions are many and widespread over the large continent. African religions have had influence on the rest of the world due to africans being brought as slaves to the americas back in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. An understanding of african religions is important to understand the problems, history, and politics in africa. African life is very strongly connected to their religion. The way westerners see african religion is very obscure and inaccurate. There are two common stereotypes made by western people. The first stereotype is that africa is savage and superstitious. This stereotype has been used to justify white racism and mistreatment of african people. The other stereotype is positive, but nonetheless treats africa as a unified whole. There is no single religion, theology, world-view, or ritual system in africa.
