The study of religion started around the mid 1800s. Central myth- component of narrative (story) gives the element of meaning. Ethics- moral values/ rules for how to do things/ how to live. Material expression- songs, places of worships, sacred places, mountains. Transcendent (outside of the world) vs. immanent(here and now) (pg. 10) Theism- belief in a personal god: monotheism- belief in only 1 god, polytheism- belief in many gods. Non-theism- there is no god but it expresses transcendent reality: sacredness is not located in a particular being (ex: buddhism) Agnosticism- inability to know if there is a god. Historical- critical method of textual study: this is a way to study ancient texts, it puts things in textual context. Phenomenology of religion: something that appears, focus on the experience of the people, oberservation and not jumping to a theory, essence of religion, they were still looking for a purpose, rudolph otto.
