Document Summary

See gen 28:13-14; 46:27; exod 1:5-7; 3:8; 6:4. The divine promise of many descendents is fulfilled by exod 1. Exod 1-15 narrates the beginning of the fulfillment of the promise of the land: organization of ex 1-15. 13-15: part ii = the dramatic prelude to the departure in part iii. Observations: the plagues narrate the collision between jahweh and pharaoh. Whose will is superior: basic pattern: god commissions moses; pharaoh refuses; plague; Pharaoh relents; moses intercedes and the plague ends; pharaoh refuses: the sequence of plagues in exod 7-13 doesn"t always make sense. Note tension, e. g. , between plague on livestock (9:6) and the hail plague (9:19). Explanation: psalm 78:44-51 and 105:23-38 list the egyptian plagues, but the number and order are different. Explanation: the passover narrative, passover plague = climax of plague series, genre: cultic legend for combined festivals of passover and unleavened bread. Etiological function of the legend is explicit in 12:24-27 and 13:5-8, 10, and 13:14-16.
