Women"s and men"s spheres: transition from farming to wage labor, rise of commercial capitalism, women left home alone to tend to children and household, separate spheres , from cooperation to separation. 1946-1964 huge spike in the birthrate: explanations: Shift in preferred family size: high-point for the homemaker-breadwinner household, the 1960s and beyond, birthdate plunged, marriage delayed, young people wanted independence, cohabitation trend begins, divorce rate doubled, women working outside the home.
