Deinition of abnormal behavior: patterns of behaviors, thoughts, or emotions, considered pathological (diseased or disordered) for one or more of these four reasons: deviance dysfunction distress danger. Deviance: socially deviant -- problematic -- being deviant doesn"t mean someone is pathological -- things now that are normal may seem more deviant to older generations. Dysfunction: interfere with daily functions -- sleeping patterns, eating patterns, hygiene, not showing up for school/work -- levels of dysfunction: emotions getting in the way, irritable, mood lower, lethargic. Danger: present danger to self or others -- dangerous sexual behaviors, too much alcohol, drugs, road rage. One or more of these has to be present for a psychological disorder. Definition of trephining: hold put in skull so evil spirits can escape -- cure in the stone. Definition of diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders: a classification system developed by the american psychiatric association that is used to describe abnormal behaviors.
