Plasma membrane: function: regulate the movement of substances in & out of the cell. Which is maintaining the homeostatic state of the cell: made of phospholipids and proteins. Its unique structure lets it be selectively permeable. Its permeability is dependent on: size, shape, lipid solubility, concentration, temperature, pressure, 2 ways for moving substances in and out of the cell is through: passive and active transport. Passive transport: substances (o2 & h2o) can pass through the plasma membrane with no energy (atp), facilitated diffusion & filtration are other mechanisms of p. t. Osmosis: water across a selectively permeable membrane, a solution needs a solvent (h2o) and a solute. Involves my explanation with hypotonic, hypertonic, and isotonic: hypotonic lower concentration of solute relative to the inside of the cell. As a result, water rushes into the cell in attempt to reach a state of equilibrium. As the cell fills with solvent, the cell will swell and burst!
