Shifts in patterns in immigrants have resulted in much more racially and ethnically diverse population. Instead of heterogeneous vs homogeneous, it is helpful to think about culture as more or less heterogeneous or homogeneous. Diversity can expand our conceptions of what is possible as various lifestyles and ways of thinking converge. Increased opportunity does not always lead to increased interaction.
