Laws are created in response to problems that existed in the past. Laws tell teachers what they can and must do. Professional ethics: set of moral standards for acceptable professional behaviors. National education association(nea): code of ethics inform standards of teacher professionalism. Freedom of speech/press/etcbut you can"t have your students read or let them say anything that seems inappropriate. Unreasonable search and seizure, must have probable cause before searching a student"s backpack or locker. Licensure: process by which state evaluates credentials of prospective teachers to ensure they"ve achieved satisfactory levels of teaching competence and are morally fit to work with young people. Teaching contracts: legal employment agreement between teacher and local school board. Collective bargaining: occurs when local chapter of professional organization negotiates with school district over rights of teachers and conditions of employment. Grievance: formal complaint against an employer alleging unsatisfactory working conditions. Tenure: legal safeguard that provides job security by preventing teacher dismissal without cause and due process.
