Socialization: process by which parents and others ensure that a child"s standards of behavior, attitudes, skills, and motives conform closely to those deemed appropriate to her role in society. Parents do influence and direct their children, but their children also influence them and play an active role in their own socialization. A system is complex and organized, has an ongoing identity of its own, and although it maintains a certain stability over time, it must also be capable of morphogenesis, adapting to changes within and outside the system. Families ted to attain equilibrium, or homeostasis, in their functioning and to become resistant to forces that might alter this balance. Families have boundaries that vary in how permeable or vulnerable they are to outside influences. Both partners in a marriage, or other form of committed relationship, make up the marital system, which is the first and founding subsystem of the family system.
