Our typology of regimes is based on what social scientists call ideal types, abstractions at the poles of variation. Between these extremes, there are a range of regimes that combine elements of democracy and undemocracy. A savage civil war was fought to bring the nation under something resembling unitary rule. The british painfully established military control but also began negotiating with irish representatives: within two years, the negotiations had led to an agreement: partition of northern. Ireland from the rest, and dominion status similar to that of canada and south africa for a newly created irish free state outside the north.
