Rockett reading: population and health: an intro to epidemiology. Ian rocket: professor of epidemiology in tennessee, recent publications about injury epidemiology and life table applications. Epidemiology: study of distribution and determinants of health related states or events in specified populations, and the application of this study to control of health problems, study of collective health, word is derived from epidemic. Epidemiology and demography share a linguistic heritage and also overlap in data and research domain. Etiology: the study of causes of disease. Epidemiology has many different branches: genetic, reproductive, nutritional. Basic epidemiology concepts: exposure, risk factor, epidemic, bias. Life table: table that displays proportions of a population surviving to various ages and the life expectancy at these ages, developed to aid in computing annuities. Improved hospital hygiene: decreased maternal mortality from puerperal (childbirth) fever, noticed that there was high mortality in the rooms where the med students, who did not wash their hands, were working.
