FLS 360 Chapter Notes - Chapter 5: Mars Cube One, Systematic Chaos
Document Summary
The standard shooting angle has been one that approximates our everyday view of things. Camera angles can distort the appearance of the characters, objects, and events of the environment: can highlight the dramatic, sinister, bizarre, or other nature of a film. Another function is the presentation of varying viewpoints: it can show a character"s interest, disinterest, etc. Medium distance provides a kind of normal perspective: the camera position does not obtrude into the audience"s awareness of the action. Close-ups force moments in the film upon the viewer. Long shots emphasize the composition of the characters rather than the individuality. Events occurring here have a significance that events in an unbounded space do not have: example: the convergence of characters" movements on the screen tends to indicate that something important is going to happen. The relative size (scale) of persons and objects also assumes prominence: this can indicate the relationship between certain characters.
