An infectious disease caused by poliovirus that can lead to paralysis. Half of these occur in 5 countries: india, nigeria, drc, pakistan and china. Additional comments on selected causes of morbidity and mortality of young children. Average 3-6 per year in low/middle income. Leads to: dehydration, loss of nutrition, wasting, intestinal damage. 3-4 cases a year 5 and under. Leading cause of death in sub-saharan africa. 200,000 infected newborns, 90% in sub-saharan africa. 15-45% if mom is hiv positive and not receiving art. Risk factors for neonatal, infant and child deaths.
