Incarceration rates have grown up too high to ignore: we chose the most oppressive method of treating issues, not rehab or programs. Increased growth due to police surveillance of specific groups: due to increased # of convictions, differences in sentencing patterns, higher latino and black than white for drugs, disagreement about degree of media and political influence. Stigma prevents person from getting job despite changing: mental illness, alcoholism, little fam support, health, race, stress, stigma all contribute to health issues, health issues before prison, and even worse after. Inmates have high level of infectious diseases and mental illness. Family: 1 in 9 children have parent in jail, household disadvantage, childhood mental illness, 25% of aa women are married. Increased aggression and delinquency: putting children in foster care, worse mental health, worse for boys than girls.
