Chapter 2: perspectives on human communication, pages 24-44. Multiple ways to investigate the topic of interpersonal conflict: interview men and women about behavior in conflict, observe couples during conflict, create and test hypotheses. Paradigms- belief system that represents a particular worldview with assumptions about knowledge, the nature of reality and human nature these guide research and theory development. Theory- sets of statements that explain particular phenomena offer insight into one"s own and others" communication. Methods- the specific ways that scholars collect and analyze data which they then use to prove or disprove their theories they use interviews, focus groups, and analyses of text. Comm experts disagree about best way to communicate because comm is interdisciplinary in nature influenced by diff disciplines over the years: scholars borrow from one another, and their understandings of research has changed differences are less defined. The social science approach: assumptions, theories, methods, ethical issues, strengths, and limitations.
