Investigation and punishment of people who commit crimes as well as efforts to protect the public by preventing others from doing the same. Mala in se: offenses that are wrong by their very nature: ex. rape and murder. Mala prohibita: offenses prohibited by law but not wrong in themselves: ex. prostitution, gambling, drug use. 3 goals of the system: doing justice. Arresting, prosecuting, convicting and punishing those who disobey the law, and efforts to control crime must be carried out within the framework of the law: preventing crime. Deterrent effect of police, courts and corrections, punish those who violate but also provide examples of what not to do. Federalism: a system of government in which power is divided between a central (national) government and regional (state) governments. Most crimes are de ned by state laws, a variety of national criminal laws have been enacted by congress and are enforced by the fbi, drug enforcement.
