Document Summary

James hansen storms of my grandchildren chapter 9. Coal emissions must be phased out as rapidly as possible: this is an overwhelming amount of coal left in the ground that could be extracted still but we have a carbon budget that we cannot surpass. Peak oil/coal will not save us because there is still a lot of oil/gas left on earth and a ton more coal reserves left. If we phased out coal completely between 2010-2030 we could reach a peak of 400-425 ppm and maybe even 350 ppm. We can"t stop using oil and natural gas because russia and the middle east own large reserves that each is economically dependent on; this means we must look to coal to phase out. Kyoto was a failure: emissions reductions were only set for developed countries while developing countries were not required to reduce emissions, emission reductions targets don"t work whether they"re voluntary or binding.
