PSY 2510 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Central Nervous System, Lobes Of The Brain, Hindbrain
Document Summary
We could say that the function of the brain, as part of the central nervous system (cns), is to regulate most functions of the body and mind. This includes from vital functions such as breathing or heart rate, through more basic functions such as sleeping, being hungry or the sexual instinct, to higher functions such as thinking, remembering or speaking. In the parts of the brain it is analyzed how the most basic vital functions are measured by the oldest brain structures, that is, those located in the rhombencephalon (medulla, bulge, and cerebellum) and the midbrain. In contrast, the hemispheres and brain lobes that are part of the cortex control higher brain functions such as memory reasoning, attention. Cognitive functions are the mental processes that allow us to receive, select, store, transform, elaborate and retrieve information from the environment. This allows us to understand and relate to the world around us.
