Thomas hopkins gallaudet and laurent clerc came together to establish the 1st school for deaf students in america - 1817. Compares alice cogswell (deaf student of thomas gallaudet) to tarzan and frederick. The oralists come off as greedy and selfish . Gallaudet proved that deaf ppl could be educated. Mutual respect and collaboration b/t deaf and hearing ppl. Gallaudet and clerc were viewed as founding fathers to the deaf community. Schools opening for the deaf inspired other states to create their own schools. A student thought when at home, i thought i was the only deaf and dumb girl in the world, before i had seen any other one . Asl is a mix of french sign language, martha"s vineyard sign language, and home signs of the students.
